About Neurodivergence and Autism Spectrum Disorder

What are the signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder?

ASD is a form of neurodivergence characterized by differences in communication, social interactions, repetitive behaviors and restricted interests.

When can ASD be diagnosed?

It can be diagnosed from the toddler years onwards when persistent differences in communication, social interactions and interests are present that cause functional impairment. These can include challenges with small-talk or a conversational flow, unique interests, reduced ability to understand emotions, difficulty with nonverbal communication, rigidity, repetitive behaviors or speech, and sensory processing interests.

What can parents do to help afflicted children?

A full diagnostic report highlights unique strengths as well as functional impairments, which helps parents to better understand their children. This report can be used to create an individualized educational plan at school and it may make suggestions for practical strategies for life home too. Research suggests that early interventions can drastically improve communication as well as explicitly teach social skills.
