About ADHD
What are the signs of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder?
According to the American Psychiatric Association’s diagnostic manual (DSM-5), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder is characterized by a pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that impairs one’s functioning or development. The symptoms are varied and can include a pattern of:

- Careless mistakes
- Difficulty sustaining attention
- Absentmindedness
- Misplaced objects
- Forgetfulness
- Fidgeting

- Inability to stay seated
- Inappropriate running or climbing
- Excessive talking
- Trouble waiting
- Frequent interruptions
Surveying different cultures, the American Psychological Association estimates that 5% of children and 2.5% of adults have ADHD.
When can Attention-Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder be diagnosed?
The pattern of behavior must occur in multiple settings (at school and at home) and have remained stable for at least 6 months. Some symptoms must have been present before age 12.
What can parents do to help afflicted children?
Research indicates that an early diagnosis and effective treatment will help your child. Diagnostic testing identifies the exact area(s) in which your child needs extra help. For severe cases, help may come in the form of a recommendation for prescription medication, however, medication is ALWAYS YOUR FAMILY'S CHOICE and never mandated! Cognitive behavioral therapy (without medication) has also proven successful. Cognitive behavioral therapy can also be combined with prescription medication.
The diagnostic report you receive will help you advocate for your child at school. It makes suggestions for teachers about which classroom accommodations would benefit your child. These may include breaks to move around, extra scaffolding to stay organized, extra time on tests, etc.
