Encouraging Bilingualism & Early Reading

Shared picture book reading is one of the most widespread literacy activities in the
family context. Through warm and responsive interaction, it offers parents and children a
valuable opportunity to foster these foundational skills in playful and meaningful ways while
strengthening their emotional bond. Different types of bilingual picture books can offer
additional opportunities for literacy development in bilingual families, yet these potentials
remain largely underused.
Following a brief introduction to the concepts of the mental lexicon, phonological
awareness, and print knowledge with a focus on practical applications, the workshop
explores empirically supported interaction strategies for high-quality shared picture book
reading. Participants will have the opportunity to practice these strategies using bilingual
picture book materials. Emphasis is placed on adapting and implementing these interaction
strategies in ways that reflect parents’ and children’s needs, interests, and everyday
experiences. The aim is to empower parents to create authentic, enjoyable, and
educationally enriching interactions with their children and to make the most of the valuable
moments that shared picture books can offer for language and literacy development.
